The Honda Civic hatchback has been popular in most of the world for decades. Despite that popularity -- and a handful of die-hard fans here in the States -- it never quite caught on here. In 2005, Honda quietly withdrew it from the American market. When the 2017 Honda Civic hatchback debuted at this year's Geneva Auto Show, it made news not only for its striking looks, but also for the fact that it would be available once more to drivers in the United States. Here's what you should know ahead of its arrival at Gillman Honda San Antonio.

2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Details

The 2017 Honda Civic carries on after being completely redesigned for 2016. It now rides on a platform that gives it better handling thanks to a lower center of gravity. The car also looks sleeker and sharper both inside and out. The Honda Civic hatchback rejoins the traditional Honda Civic Sedan and Honda Civic Coupe in the lineup. It's also a good option for those who want the added space of a hatchback but find the 2017 Honda Fit to be a bit on the small side.

The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback comes in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Sport Touring trims. As for the engine and transmission options, there's good news. If you're buying a hatchback specifically for performance, you'll be glad to know that the Honda Civic Hatchback comes with a direct-injected, 1.5-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 174 horsepower except in the Sport trims, where the same engine is tuned to 180 horsepower. You'll also have the choice of either a six-speed manual transmission (standard on LX, Sport, and EX) or a CVT (standard on EX, EX-L; available on other trims).

2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Safety and Special Features

Being a Honda car, this model has safety prioritized from the start. The base LX trim has an electric parking brake with automatic parking hold, a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines, LED daytime running lights, and one-touch turn indicators.

On select models and trims, the Honda Sensing™ suite can be added, which gives you Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Collision Mitigation Braking System™, and Forward Collision Warning.
