When an automaker puts in the time, money and energy required to release an all-new model like the 2016 Honda HR-V, the hope is that the engineers developing it don't overlook anything significant, especially in terms of safety. Creating a new vehicle from scratch is a tough business, and when it's all said and done all the automaker can do is put the automobile through the ringer of crash tests offered by the IIHS and the NHTSA and believe in the integrity of the engineering.
In the case of the HR-V, it looks like those developing the all-new crossover did a great job making sure that it was as safe as it possibly could be, because it aced the crash tests put forth by the federal government and took home a five-star safety rating, the highest rating that the NHTSA offers.
That shouldn't come as too big a surprise considering how many safety accolades the Honda CR-V, Accord and Civic have all taken home, but all the same when a vehicle goes through the New Car Assessment Program there's always the hope that it performs as well as its older siblings. Thanks to the Honda Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure, the HR-V has a perfect stable of crumple zones that maximize safety for whomever or whatever is in the actual cabin of the automobile.
Other standard and advanced safety features certainly didn't hurt anything in these crash tests, either, with the end result being a top-rated crossover in terms of safety. That fits in well with the rest of the vehicles that Honda currently offers, and while we're aren't exactly surprised by these results, we definitely are thrilled about them. It's just one more reason to be excited about the new Honda HR-V at Gillman Honda San Antonio!
